Steam Survey – What is the most used GPU by gamers?

Each month Steam publishes your users' hardware results in the call Steam Hardware & Software Survey, in this we can see several very curious data about PC gamers, including the number of cores, which GPU is the most used, which Operating System, what percentage of users use VR headsets and much more...

Despite having all this information, we are going to focus on what is most interesting from a technical and hardware point of view and not so much on peripherals, the most used version of DirectX, etc...

GPU – Graphics Card

Let's start by reviewing the GPU or graphics card, the most important part of our equipment if what we want is to play.

GPUs sorted by usage percentage

The first thing that catches your attention is how the first 15 graphs are all from NVIDIA, a fact that is contrasted when we see that amd occupies only 15% of the PC users listed in the Steam Survey.

Clearly the trend is GTX 1060, a graphics card that has already triumphed since its launch due to its great value for money, being a GPU in the €300 range that allows you to play almost all games in high or ultra options at 60fps in 1080p.
Very close behind are the GTX 1650, a low-mid range GPU that offers exceptional performance for simple PCs, followed by the GTX 1050ti, the graphics card par excellence of the low range of the 1000 series, it was the best option until amd could compete with his RX470 with a similar price and higher performance.

The RTX 2060 get a 5.38%, being the fourth most used GPU by gamers, most likely due to the fact that it was presented as the cheapest option capable of offering DLSS and RT, making it a good option for those who want to upgrade without spending a lot of money .

CPU – Processor

Among another of the most important components of a PC we have the processor, a piece that will accompany the graphics and therefore is also very relevant.

Cores per CPU in Windows users

The trend remains between 4 and 6 cores (32 and 33% respectively), with the 6 cores barely winning, in the distance are the users with 8 cores (17,97%) and a little further away are those with 2 (10,73%) .

Increasingly closer to being a standard we have 6 cores with a 33.40%, leading as the amount most used by users.
The 4 cores are positioned very close in percentage, a figure that has been very relevant over time since the old Intel i7 had this number of cores just like the current i3/R3.

This large number of users with 6 cores can be easily understood, since this is the perfect amount to play without having a bottleneck even with the most demanding graphics cards.

RAM

For our computer to function properly, it is not enough to have the best graphics card and processor, but we will need a minimum of RAM.

RAM memory (in GB)

As statistics show, 16GB is the 2022 standard gathering up to 50.82% of the users. Behind with a 23.50% we find users with 8GB, a fair amount but still enough today for most cases.
More at the extremes of what is considered little memory and a lot, we have 4GB with a 6.69% and 32GB with a 12.08%, so we can deduce that the market has abandoned figures lower than 8GB of RAM and is beginning to approach the 32GB.

Primary resolution

The primary resolution refers to the resolution of the main monitor, that is, the one used to play.

Main monitor resolution – Steam Survey

still to this day 1080p remains the majority resolution with a 66.72%, a very high percentage.
Resolutions lower than 1080p have largely disappeared, bringing together less than a 15%, likewise higher resolutions do not seem to be taking on too much relevance as we find 1440p (2560x1440) with a 10.18%, ultrawide resolution 21:9 3440×1440 with a 1.33% and the famous 4K (3840×2160) with a low 2,42%.

These data coincide with the first statistics we have seen, where the xx60 and xx50 series graphics were the predominant ones, graphics focused on 1080p ultra, however the rest of the users with high-end graphics cards capable of 4K@60Hz or 1440p@144Hz seem that remain at 1080p resolution, this may also be because most 4K screens are televisions, and gamers almost entirely prefer a monitor over a TV.

Operating System – OS

Operating System – Steam Survey

For now Windows continues to lead with a 96.37% of the total number of Steam players, a figure that makes sense when we discard macOS since this OS is not optimized for gaming and Macs do not even have powerful graphics cards.
About Linux, this system is more complicated to use than Windows in general, so most users prefer to go for the Microsoft option, coupled with the fact that to play on Linux we will need to install API translators like Wine, specific drivers, etc. …make this operating system an unattractive option for the average user.

However, Linux It has more and more facilities regarding the gaming sector, this is largely thanks to the recent console that Valve has launched, the Steam Deck which uses a distribution derived from Debian as operating system.
