Differences between Religions: Catholicism, Judaism and Islam

Anyone today is aware that there are many religions, very different from each other, with very different historical and social contexts as well; so much so that even within Christianity we can find different versions and Bible interpretations and the values of Christ, who is not only an essential character in this religious current, but also appears as an influential figure in other Holy Books as in the Quran (book of Islam) or in the Torah (book of Judaism). That is why today I want to make a brief summary of the similarities and differences between religions.

In the end, All these books and religious currents have things in common, and also issues in which they discern, that is why today I wanted to compare 7 extrapolated traits of all religions: The hierarchy of its members, the dogma of Holy Trinity, influence of the Virgin Mary, vision of the rest of religions, relationship Church-State, administration of the sexual relations, and administration of marriage.

Differences between Religions and Books (Bible, Koran and Torah)

Three curiosities before starting:

  • Both Islam and Judaism follow their own Holy Book, but both have direct references to the Bible.
  • Although Israel is the Holy Place of Christians, only 2% of the inhabitants of Israel are Christians.
  • All religions except Evangelicalism reject homosexual marriage and divorce, and Islam allows even death sentences in these cases.

Islam – 1.9 billion followers.

  • There is no hierarchy of devotion.
  • Neither God, nor the Holy Spirit nor Jesus are the same.
  • The Virgin Mary is the most important woman in history.
  • The rest of the existing religions are equally respected.
  • The State must be built around the word of the Koran.
  • Sexual relations can only be had within marriage, although a man can have several wives.
  • Imams (who lead the Islamic ceremony) are no different from other devotees, and can always maintain relationships within their marriages.

Catholic Church – 1214 million followers.

  • Very hierarchical structure, where the highest earthly authority is the Pope, and his decisions are unquestionable.
  • God is the Holy Spirit, and God is also Christ.
  • The Virgin Mary was born, like Christ, without Original Sin.
  • They consider the rest of the Bible followers as true believers.
  • The Church usually has the say over the State.
  • Sexual relations can only be had within marriage and these must be done without protection.
  • All priests or superiors are prohibited from marrying, in order to serve God better than civilians.

Protestant Church (Evangelical) – 801 million followers.

  • Horizontal structure, where there are many Protestant Churches and all are equally valid. They consider the Pope as a heresy.
  • God is the Holy Spirit, and God is also Christ.
  • The Virgin Mary was a normal and ordinary person.
  • They do not agree with many of the interpretations of the word of God, neither Catholic nor other religions.
  • The Individual decides about himself above the word of the Church and the State.
  • Any practitioner of this religion can marry and have sexual relations within it.
  • All followers of this Church serve God in the same way and can marry freely.

Orthodox Church – 320 million followers.

  • It is one Church, but they do not contemplate the need for a superior, so they reject the Pope and make all decisions among all the Bishops.
  • God is the Holy Spirit, but Christ and God are different.
  • They recognize the importance of the Virgin Mary, but only Christ was born without Original Sin.
  • They consider Catholic Christians as heretics.
  • The word of the Church and the State have the same weight.
  • You can only have sexual relations within marriage, where you can use contraceptives against STDs that do not have an abortive effect.
  • There are different levels of service to God, but everyone can marry, although the most devout are invited to maintain celibacy.

Judaism – 14.3 million followers.

  • They have a small hierarchy in which two Chief Rabbis represent their religion.
  • To think that God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit are the same is heresy. Christ was a normal and ordinary person.
  • The Virgin Mary was a normal and ordinary person.
  • It legitimizes the Christian faith of every Gentile person.
  • The word of the Torah (Old Testament) has more weight than any political decision, and is their only guide (they ignore the New Testament).
  • They can have all types of sexual relations as long as it is within marriage.
  • Regardless of hierarchy, everyone can enjoy sex.

Jehovah's Witnesses – 8.7 million followers.

  • Within his Church there are no positions, the oldest and wisest are those who supervise the meetings.
  • Neither God, nor the Holy Spirit, nor Christ are the same.
  • The Virgin Mary was a normal and ordinary person.
  • They do not tolerate any different religion, since all others make human interpretations of the Bible, and will be punished by God.
  • They do not intervene in any matter outside their religious community, so they ignore the State, and are only guided by what is written in the Bible.
  • They can only marry people of the same religion, and are prohibited from even kissing if they have not married.
  • There is no hierarchy and any member can marry.
