Love, Death and Robots – Review – Best Chapters

Love, Death and Robots is a Netflix original audiovisual animation work where in each chapter different stories written and produced by different teams and artists are told, and in this ranking we will talk precisely about which, in my opinion, have been the worst and best chapters, making a small review without cutting into spoilers, so I recommend watching each of the episodes of Love, Death and Robots before reading the following small individual analyzes of each chapter.

Best and Worst Episodes of Love Death and Robots

Introduction

To start, I would like to clarify that each and every one of the chapters has its special touch and I recommend seeing all eighteen that there are; but still I want to classify them into three different groups.

The first is that of the chapters that seemed dull and predictable to me, without any relevant background. The second group is that of episodes I enjoyed, and the third is that of the episodes that have made me enjoy and reflect, without a doubt for me: the best chapters, among which some had a predictable ending, but not unoriginal.

In the first group there are 6 episodes, while in the second there are 5 and in the last 7.

18.- Alternative Stories

historias alternativas, en mi opinión, el peor episodio de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 17

Starting at number eighteen and the only chapter I have a negative review for, we find Alternate Histories.

It is a 2D animated short directed by the same people who directed one of the episodes that I liked the most, and adapted from a work by the writer John Scalzi; However, this chapter made me quite nervous and I barely enjoyed it.

Its approach is the most interesting of all the episodes, since they begin by talking about a machine that shows you what your current era would be like by modifying some events from the past; And of course, they tell you that the most requested event of all is to see your time without Hitler having led Germany.

They immediately abandon the main theme, introduce you to the scene with the worst drawing of all the chapters and tell you that you are going to see the six possible ways in which Hitler could have died, and this is when everything gets out of control.

They tell you that the most famous German leader could, in a very fictitious way, have died from a giant block of gelatin launched by Russia, or from excessive sex with four prostitutes who come from a parallel dimension, etc... and that in the future without Hitler would have destroyed the planet, or it would have been conquered by intelligent octopuses, or by interdimensional traveling prostitutes...

Anyway. With all the thoughtful stories that Love, Death & Robots has, including blood, drama, mystery and so many other things, this could have been the perfect opportunity to create a realistic story, with serious drawing and telling you real facts while speculating about how the present could be seen by changing that historical fact. It seems like a really good idea developed by a ten year old, honestly.

17.- Fishing Night

noche de pesca, duodécimo capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 12

In seventeenth place, for me, would be Fish Night.

It is a short with a beautiful drawing and animations, possibly the ones I liked the most among the eighteen episodes, but beyond making me say “look what a beautiful effect, and what a relaxing feeling”, it has not conveyed anything to me.

I don't have any negative criticism of this chapter and the next four; I simply haven't enjoyed them as much as the twelve that I found entertaining.

16.- The Landfill

el vertedero, noveno capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 9

In sixteenth place we have The Dump, a curious chapter, but, in my opinion, quite slow. With an ingenious ending, especially because of the detail of the lighter, which, however, has not gotten through to me in any way.

It doesn't make you reflect, or even barely empathize with the protagonist, and I think that its entire script is based on the final outcome, which, although it is what everyone expects, is the correct way to conclude the episode.

15.- Blind point

punto ciego, decimoquinto capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 15

Blindspot is in a fairly low position, however, from here on I have already started to enjoy the chapters a little, because there is action, and because of this the animation is more dynamic.

I wouldn't be surprised if people could place this chapter even among the best half of chapters, but that's not my case.

There is a somewhat epic moment when the captain of the thieves, someone who seems quite skilled, is destroyed in a humiliating way, since I don't think there is a better way to introduce an enemy than by having him finish, without trying, the one he He is expected to be the strongest character on the protagonist's side.

However, throughout the episode I was hoping that since they were robots they would actually be able to rebuild themselves, and this is how the chapter ends: without any dead protagonist, returning home with the mission accomplished, but nullifying the entire main effect of the chapter: the drama that the three alleged deaths generated.

14.- Suits

trajes, cuarto capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 4

Suits is not very clear to me why it is in fourteenth place, since like Punto Ciego, it is an episode with a lot of action and dynamic animation, in addition to the fact that this episode does have a dramatic death that gives more emotion to the episode. background of the entire story; However, it has been difficult for me to enjoy it.

For some reason it has seemed a bit "heavy" to me, but there will undoubtedly be people for whom it is one of the best chapters, since seen objectively it has action, drama and a great ending while they drink beers remembering their fallen friend and the camera zooms out, allowing us to see the entire planet and how it is in the middle of an apocalypse and there are only a few groups of humans surviving in groups.

Anyway; Although I quite liked the ending and I wasn't expecting it, I found the development of the chapter somewhat tedious and that is why it is in this position for me.

13.- Soul Eater

devorador de almas, quinto capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 5

To finish with the first group of episodes we have Sucker of Souls, in thirteenth place.

Objectively speaking, I would dare to say that this chapter is a little worse than the previous two (14th and 15th in my personal ranking), but nevertheless there is a black humor joke among all that history that has managed to make the chapter rise a bit.

When translating it into Spanish, I don't know how they solved it, but the fact is that in English “kitty” and “pussy” are written and pronounced the same, and this causes a very unexpected play on words, in the middle of a quite tense scene, where One of the protagonists, upon learning that the monsters they are facing die if they eat a cat, says: “I wouldn't be the only one who gets in trouble for eating a little kitten,” which can be interpreted as : “I wouldn't be the first to get in trouble for eating a minor's pussy.”

I don't know; It's a pretty delicate scene, so hearing that suddenly made me quite amused.

On the other hand, I don't think there is anything more notable, since the action is scarce and I find it to be a chapter that is neither funny enough, nor dramatic enough, nor dynamic enough.

12.- Lucky 13

afortunados 13, decimotercer capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 13

Giving way to the second group of episodes according to my subjective and personal criticism, we find Lucky 13, whose translation seems to me to be the worst of all the titles, since they could perfectly have called it “Lucky 13” or something like that.

Furthermore, these five chapters of the second group for me are all equally good, and their position in the ranking is mere aesthetics, so as not to leave a five-fold tie.

Returning to Lucky 13, in this episode we see the relationship that is created between a new army pilot and a combat ship that no one wanted to use because it was said to be cursed.

She manages to become attached to the plane and at no point in the story are you clear about what is going to happen, leaving you with tension with every shot you hear.

In the end, the beautiful thing about this story is that the ship sacrifices itself when no one was inside it in order to save its pilot from certain death.

11.- The Secret War

la guerra secreta, decimoctavo capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 18

Again, in Secret War, we find another beautiful story with shocking decisions, where some Russian soldiers in the middle of what seems to be the Cold War are investigating a type of monster that attacked their armies and people.

The episode concludes with the platoon general sacrificing himself along with all his men to let the youngest soldier, his son, escape and in this way manage to send key information to his superiors, who, thanks to those documents received, manage to exterminate the nest of these creatures. so lethal.

10.- The ice age

la edad de hielo, decimosexto capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 16

This is a very curious episode, Ice Age, which tells us the story of a civilization inside a freezer, where time passes at a speed infinitely higher than that which passes outside.

The freezer has owners, of course, and they are the main protagonists of this story, since they are the ones who discover that they have a civilization developing in their refrigerator and it is through them that we can take a look inside the freezer.

When the protagonist opens the freezer for the first time in the morning, the little individuals inside were more or less in the Pleistocene era, but when he opens it for the second time they were already in the middle of the Middle Ages, then in the Industrial Revolution. , and in this way an entire humanity advances every 24 hours.

Within 24 hours, civilization is so advanced that it consumes itself and the cycle begins again.

It is a very curious and original chapter, really.

9.- Yogurt to Power

yogur al poder, sexto capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 6

In ninth place we have When the Yogurt Took Over, which tells a comic story with a subtle criticism of governments and people as a whole.

It is certainly something to reflect on, because Smart Yogurt gives presidents the secret formula to end the crisis and the most prestigious presidents and directors in the world decide to ignore the yogurt documents, thus causing the largest global crisis, where They are forced to abandon their position and cede all the powers in the world to Yogurt.

In the end yogurt had solved all the problems of human beings, and everyone lived happily without worrying about anything, because yogurt took care of everything important, until one day it gets tired of human stupidity and goes into outer space looking for intelligent life.

As I said at the beginning, it is an animated comic short, but one that gives food for thought.

8.- Metamorphosis

metamorfosis, décimo capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 10

Shape-Shifters (Metamorfosis) occupies eighth place in the ranking almost next to the previous four positions.

In this chapter we see the story of werewolves who work for an army of humans, and even though they are good “people” and helpful, they are discriminated against for being different.

There are only two werewolves that the story presents to us, but they are very good friends and comrades, until on a mission one of them dies due to an enemy trap.

At this moment the survivor avenges the death of his friend, with a very lively fight, and after finishing he decides to stand up to the soldiers who discriminated against him so much, taking the corpse of his fallen friend and abandoning the humans forever, to bury your friend and live a more independent life.

The animation is fascinating and the scene of the protagonist leaving through the main doors of the fortress with the corpse of his friend in his arms while all the humans look at him seemed sublime to me.

7.- Good hunting

buena caza, octavo capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 8

With the animated short Good Hunting we now enter the third group of episodes, which are those that I have really enjoyed watching, without a doubt and in a remarkable way, since the ones in the previous group are all very good too but they have not left the same feeling as these seven.

Good Hunting has a very peculiar 2D animation but no less professional. In this episode they will tell you the story of a boy who lives in China in the middle of the industrial revolution, and who, together with a friend with whom he has been growing up, abandons the customs of his family to adapt to the lifestyle that the settlers English propose to the Chinese.

The story from the first moment is magnificent, and I highly recommend that you check it out if you have not seen it yet.

From its beginning to its conclusion, it is a work that keeps you in suspense and will not leave anyone indifferent.

6.- Beyond Aquila

mas allá de aquila, séptimo capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 7

Beyond the Aquila Rift has one of the best animations of the entire set of episodes, along with some others such as the next post, Metamorphosis or Lucky 13.

In addition to being one of the best animated works, I consider that it is also one of the ones with the best story, where some space travelers are trapped in a space spider web and the protagonist is sedated by the spider while it feeds or takes care of them. his body, I'm not very clear.

The spider induces people into a very deep sleep and makes them believe that everything is fine, but at a delicate moment in the story the protagonist wakes up and contemplates the horrible reality, in which he realizes that it has been weeks or even months without eating, has no energy to move and is at the mercy of a rather disgusting/dark being. After this the protagonist decides to return to that fantasy dream where everything was fantastic and he did not suffer, while little by little he dies in real life.

5.- Sonnie's Advantage

la ventaja de sonnie, primer capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 1

In fifth place for best episodes of Love Death and Robots I have placed Sonnie's Edge because the background of the story is quite critical, its animation is very good and its outcome is, although predictable, unbeatable.

It tells the story of a girl who fights alongside her monster for money and whose body was abused in the past by a group of men who did all kinds of things to her.

This charismatic girl has a streak of seventeen victories fighting alongside her “pet”, although in reality the monsters are the ones who fight while the owners manage them from the stands.

I don't want to say anything more about this short because if you haven't seen it, I advise you to watch it and if you have seen it, you will already know its story, outcome and how good an episode it is.

4.- The witness

la testigo, tercer capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 3

Fourth place for best episodes of Love Death and Robots: The Witness. A short with somewhat peculiar animation and color ranges that somehow I liked more than the fifth, sixth and seventh places even though objectively I think it has much less background.

Even so, during the twelve minutes that the scene lasts, the protagonist does not stop fleeing from a murderer. This creates a feeling of constant tension for the viewer that leads to the end of the plot that I was precisely waiting for when watching the chapter: a loop or paradox in time, where an endless cycle of repetition of the short is proposed.

3.- Three Robots

tres robots, segundo capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 2

Already entering the Top 3 of the best episodes of Love Death and Robots we find Three Robots, where you will be transported to a dystopian future in which humanity became extinct long ago, and now three robots that are on an excursion to a ancient human city are the protagonists of the story.

Nothing particularly remarkable happens, since there is no action, no drama, no blood... there is nothing that makes you even maintain the tension; It is a purely comic sketch.

Throughout the course of the animation you will see the robots talking and creating quite funny situations related to illogical human behavior.

I, personally, had a great time watching this episode and I fell in love with the charismatic sense of humor of the scriptwriter or writer from whom the work comes.

2.- Helping Hand

mano amiga, undécimo capítulo de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 11

Helping Hand (Mano Amiga) is for me the Top 2 of the best episodes of Love Death and Robots, with another of these titles that does not convince me at all, since “Lend me a hand” would have been much more suitable for this episode.

Without a doubt, and leaving aside the title, it is the chapter with which I have been most tense, and the one that has made me suffer the most.

I think it doesn't reach ten minutes, but it is pure tension and drama even with only one character.

1.- Zima Blue

zima blue, decimocuarto y mi capítulo favorito de love death and robots

Love Death and Robots: Review Chapter 14

Zima Blue (whose name is the same in both English and Spanish) is for me the Top 1 of the best chapters of Love Death and Robots, and the one that has caused me the strangest sensation, without a doubt.

It tells the story of a mechanized man, who is possibly the most famous person in the universe, and how he became so famous.

He was fascinated by the universe, so he began painting giant murals in one piece where he reflected the beauty of the stars and planets, but the more money he earned and the more he learned about the universe, the greater his impulse was to paint blue paintings in the middle of his murals. .

At first it was a small square in the middle of a giant mural, but with each mural he painted, a larger blue square appeared in the middle of the work, to the point where the most famous painter in the universe began to paint only blue squares. , getting bigger.

At the end of the episode it is revealed that this painter known as Zima Blue was not a mechanized human, but a very humanized machine, which was born with the sole purpose of cleaning the walls of a swimming pool, and which little by little gained more and more functions. .

Zima Blue, after having all the fame, money and knowledge in the universe, decides to abandon his human body and all his prestige to return to a pool to clean tiles, which is what he was born to do and the activity that had been the most relaxing for him during his entire existence.

I think this chapter has a very deep moral, and without a doubt I recommend that you watch it for yourself to understand it perfectly, or even that you watch it a second or third time, as each viewing takes on more meaning.
