We all know the story that Jesus was resurrected, but I think not many of us have asked ourselves «If he was resurrected, how did Christ die the second time?«.
First of all, I want to clarify that I do not share the Christian faith, but today I decided to go to mass for personal reasons and I heard the priest say the famous phrase that Jesus died on the cross for all of us, and that on the third day he rose again. among the dead.
Upon hearing this, I couldn't help but follow the following logical thought: "He died on the cross, he was resurrected, and then what? He would have to die again at some point, but... how?"
The story they tell you almost always ends there: the miracle of the resurrection, and then what?
Resurrection and death of Jesus
Maybe if you are a devout person and you are in the habit of going to mass you do know how the story continues, however, I had no idea. My Christian knowledge does not go beyond the popular culture that everyone is aware of.
Researching this topic on the internet has not been an easy task either, because I have really been searching how Christ died the second time, without being aware of a very important fact: Jesus did not die a second time, but after 40 days and surrounded by his disciples, he ascended to heaven. There he ended his stay on Earth and made a place for himself at the right of his Father.
40 Days – Resurrection and “Second Death”
While we're here, I'll take advantage and tell you how Jesus spent those 40 extra days on earth, according to the four main gospels.
During those 40 days Jesus was seen on 6 different occasions, between Jerusalem and northern Galilee (about 250km away).
- In the first apparition he surprised Mary Magdalene, who was going to visit him at his tomb.
- Hours later Jesus accompanies two passersby to an inn. These two people did not recognize the resurrected Jesus until he blessed the bread and disappeared.
- In his third appearance he visited his disciples, who were gathered and hidden, except for Thomas. Jesus entered that house without anyone noticing, even with the doors closed, and showed them that he had risen.
- Eight days later he appeared again in front of his disciples, with Thomas this time, and he also showed him that he had been resurrected.
- His fifth appearance is made some time later, again in front of his disciples, and he helps them fish on a day when there were no fish. Pedro is the first to recognize him again.
- In his sixth appearance he goes to the Mount of Olives with all his disciples, and in front of them he ascends to the heavens, with his hands raised, until he is lost in the clouds.
In this way we can conclude that according to the evangelical accounts Jesus did not die after being resurrected, but spent 40 mysterious days working some miracles and wandering the Earth, until rose into the heavens and met with God.
